2019 SFiFF’s Opening Night Film Just Mercy

2019 SFiFF’s Opening Night Film Just Mercy

It has some of our very favorites like Shoplifters, the 2018 winner of the Palme d'Or, which went on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, plus Only the Brave starring Josh Brolin and Jeff Bridges, and On Her Shoulders by local director Alexandria Bombach. Fire at Sea by Gianfranco Rosi, which went on to receive an Oscar nom, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, the Iranian Vampire Western by Ana Lily Amirpour, The Tribe told completely in sign language, and Girlhood directed by Céline Sciamma and featuring an unforgettable dance to Rihanna's "Diamonds in the Sky."

The list includes films that played as part of the SFiFF Indigenous Program most recently Words from a Bear which was presented by author N. Scott Momaday, and all the way back to 2013 for Rhymes for Young Ghouls by Jeff Barnaby whose latest, Blood Quantum, was at SFiFF 2019, plus Ixcanul by Jayro Bustamante, the first film produced in the Kaqchikel language of the Mayan family. With more than 20 foreign features, nearly half the selections take you to another place, since the best films seem to invite you into a world that you didn't quite expect. We really, really enjoyed these selections, and hope you do too.
